The Hotel Wailea was born as a mysterious structure with an ambiguous past. Originally built in the 1980s as a members-only club called Diamond, it had the ocean at its feet, Maui's dormant volcano Haleakalā behind it, and an intriguing atmosphere inside. McManus saw the opportunity to create something new: a luxury tropical village instead of a typical high-rise like neighboring properties.
